L’installation vidéo « Grammar of calculated ambiguity » est basée sur un enregistrement audio que j’ai réalisé deux semaines après la publication des Pandora Papers1, lors d’une conférence de l’industrie de la finance offshore.
Cet événement était réservé aux professionnel·le·s de l’industrie des services financiers – fiduciaires, avocat·e·s, et gestionnaires de fortune – des insiders, souvent considéré·e·s comme les architectes des structures de finance offshore. L’industrie de la finance porte une grande part de responsabilité dans les urgences globales actuelles telles que la crise climatique et l’augmentation drastique des inégalités. Examiner ses structures et infrastructures constitue le point central dans ce projet.
J’ai fait cet enregistrement audio lors d’un panel sur la perception de l’opinion publique à l’égard de l’industrie de la finance offshore. En raison des conditions d’enregistrement, plusieurs passages sont peu audibles et perturbés par le bruit ambiant. Pour retrouver les mots perdus dans ce bruit et confronter le contenu, j’ai invité un groupe d’expert·e·s dans un studio de son pour analyser l’enregistrement, ensemble. Le groupe a été filmé pendant tout le processus d’écoute précise, de dissection, d’analyse de l’enregistrement audio ainsi que de leur reconstruction narrative.

La musicienne Olga Kokcharova a créé une composition pour « Grammar of calculated ambiguity », dans laquelle l’exploration thématique et le rôle central du son sont également réexaminés. Une création sonore qui utilise les écouteurs et les haut-parleurs de l’installation comme des éléments modulables et poreux.
L’installation est composée d’un écran, et les bandes sons sont diffusées par des écouteurs et des haut-parleurs.

Die Videoinstallation « Grammar of calculated ambiguity » basiert auf einer Audioaufzeichnung, die ich zwei Wochen nach der Veröffentlichung der Pandora Papers* während einer Konferenz der Offshore Finanz Industrie aufgenommen habe. Diese mehrtägige Veranstaltung war den Insidern der Finanzdienstleistungsbranche vorbehalten – Treuhänder·innen, Anwält·innen und Vermögensverwalter·innen – und richtete sich exklusiv an diese, sozusagen Architekten der Offshore Strukturen. Die Finanz Industrie nimmt eine Schlüsselrolle bei der Verantwortung aktueller globaler Notlagen wie der Klimakrise und der drastischen Zunahme der Ungleichheit ein. Die Untersuchung dieser Strukturen und Infrastrukturen steht im Mittelpunkt dieses Projekts.
Die Audioaufzeichnung, die ich gemacht habe, dokumentiert eine Podiumsdiskussion, in der die Wahrnehmung und die öffentliche Meinung zur Offshore-Finanzindustrie besprochen wurde. Aufgrund der Aufnahmebedingungen sind mehrere Passagen akustisch schwer verständlich und durch Rauschen gestört. Um nach diesen im Lärm und in der Störung verlorenen Wörtern zu graben und somit auch den Inhalt zu besprechen, habe ich eine Gruppe von Expert·innen in ein Tonstudio eingeladen, und ihnen die Audioaufnahme dort zur Bearbeitung übergeben.
Während ihrem präzisen An-hören, dem sezierten und analytischen dekonstruieren der Audioaufnahme sowie der anschliessenden Rekonstruktion des Narrativ wurde die Gruppe gefilmt.

Die Musikerin Olga Kokcharova hat für « Grammar of calculated ambiguity » eine Komposition geschaffen, in der die thematische Auseinandersetzung und die zentrale Rolle des Klangs weiter untersucht werden. Diese Klangkreation erfasst die Kopfhörer und Lautsprecher der Installation als modulierbare und poröse Formen. Die Installation besteht aus einem Bildschirm und der Ton wird über Kopfhörer und Lautsprecher wiedergegeben.

The video installation “Grammar of calculated ambiguity” is based on an audio recording I made two weeks after the publication of the Pandora Papers*, during a conference organised by the offshore finance industry. This event was reserved for insiders of the financial services sector – trustees, lawyers, and wealth managers – and was aimed solely at those who can be considered the architects of offshore structures. The finance industry embodies a key role in the responsibility for current global emergencies such as the climate crisis and the drastic increase in inequality. An examination of these structures and infrastructures forms the focus of this project.
This audio recording documents a panel discussing the perception of public opinion on the offshore finance industry. Due to the recording conditions, several passages are acoustically difficult to understand and disturbed by noise. To extract the words lost in the noise and thereby verify and discuss the content, I invited a group of experts to a sound studio and handed them the audio recording for processing. The group was filmed during their entire precise listening, dissection and analytical deconstruction of the audio recording and the following reconstruction of the narrative.

Musician Olga Kokcharova created a composition for “Grammar of calculated ambiguity” that further examines the thematic exploration and the central role of sound. This sound creation engages with the installation’s headphones and speakers as modulable and porous forms.
The installation consists of a screen, and the sound is played through headphones and loudspeakers.
